Albertine Habit
A knot = Wound of Christ
Be girded with, and hold on to the wounds of Christ, in the time of need for in them is our healing.
An image of Devine Mercy is a wonderful modern-day expression of these five glorious wounds through which contemplation He is eager to bring us healing.
“Gird up your loins”
Job 38:3
is deeply rooted in the Old Testament, reaches onto New Testament, and still lives among us today.
In the Congregation of Albertine Sisters Serving the Poor, it’s accomplished through the use of a rope with 5 knots.
“Gird up your loins (Job 38:3): prepare for combat—figuratively, be ready to defend yourself in debate.”
Isaiah, CHAPTER 53 | USCCB, n.d.)
It speaks to a life of preparedness, Where no surprise can catch us off guard without “means” to fight. It is a symbolic reminder of internal readiness that should be maintained within us, in order not to fall victim to the prowling evil.
“Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for [someone] to devour.”
1 Peter 5:8
One of the means to fight that we have in our reach is the 5 wounds of Christ. The wounds that he sustained in the act of redemption, out of love for us.
“But he was pierced for our sins,
Isaiah 53:5
crushed for our iniquity.
He bore the punishment that makes us whole,
by his wounds we were healed.”
Think 5 knots in relationship to Jesus.
Thank you for this information. I have been Catholic my whole life but never knew the meaning of the knots.
I have never read or heard of the knots before i will have to make a small rope of 5 knots for my home Alter
